Ammonite is expected to be praised by critics, the Academy, and also by the audience. Since periodic movies, especially the romantic type, have been hailed by Oscar voters in the past. Recently the trailer of the film released, director Francis Lee made a strong step by making a periodic movie on lesbian love. With an interview with Mary Anning’s family member, Barbara Anning said that she does not believe there is any evidence to back up the fact that she was a gay woman. Another relative, Lorraine Anning said as long the movie is presented well it does not matter. In the defense, Lee noted that there is no evidence of the heterosexual relationship in history. The culture was routinely straightened. Lee also stated earlier that this movie is not a biopic, Anning’s life inspires it, and even the studies and research into the same-sex female relationship.
London’s National History Museum named a room after Anning’s contribution. She was also nominated to have her face included on a £50 note. The film Ammonite premiered in Cannes this year and will be featured in the Toronto film festival next month. And suppose Ronan receives positive recognition for her role in Ammonite. In that case, she will be the youngest person in Oscar history to get nominated for the fifth time in a row. Although from the trailer, Ammonite seems to resemble the French drama of 2019 Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which tells a similar story. The film holds a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ammonite will also receive a similar kind of response if not better than that. It was selected for screening at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2020, which got canceled due to pandemic.
